Oh Solemn Hour! That Hour Alone

by J.G. Deck

Tune: Crucifixion 8.6.8.8.6.8.8.

1 OH solemn hour! that hour alone
In solitary might,
When God the Father's only Son,
As man for sinners to atone,
Expires --- amazing sight!
The Lord of glory crucified!
The Prince of life has bled and died!

2 O mystery of mysteries!
Of life and death the tree;
Centre of two eternities,
Which look, with rapt, adoring eyes,
Onward and back to Thee.
O cross of Christ, where all His pain
And death is our eternal gain.

3 Oh, how our inmost hearts do move
While gazing on that cross!
The death of the Incarnate Love!
What shame, what grief, what joy we prove,
That He should die for us!
Our hearts were broken by that cry,
"Eli, lama sabachthani?"

4 Worthy of death, O God, we were;
Thy judgment was our due;
In grace Thy spotless Lamb did bear
Himself our sins and guilt and shame;
Justice our surety slew,
With Him our surety we have died,
With Him we there were crucified.

I wonder whether James Deck would have approved of all the changes made to his original hymn. The most obvious is the gratuitous replacement in verse 4, of the original last word in line 4, 'fear', with 'shame' which breaks the rhyme scheme. Timothy.

Another point is whether T. Willey would approve of the butchery done to his tune! Three aberrant fermatas introduced and three dotted notes 'smoothed' out! Completely ruins the flow of his original composition, madefor this hymn. See his 'Melodies and Chants' on this site for the correct version.

JGD’s original ‘Sacred Poem’ contained 17 verses, verses 8, 9, 10, and 11 of which were used to make the hymn in question. Only a few changes were made, mostly as a result of changing “I” to “we”. [Timothy, I’m sure “shame” is original and not “fear”?]

"Oh, how my inmost bowels move"

I'm not aware that JGD expressed - as did Sir ED - any objection to editing his compositions to render them more suitable for collective singing. I'm grateful for the service of the editors.

Magnificent hymn. The deep, deep mysteries of the death of Christ. So He said we show forth His death until He comes. Note the regularity and accent on death in each verse.
