Through The Love Of God Our Saviour

by Mary Bowley

Tune: Ar Hyd Y Nos 8.4.8.4.8.8.8.4.

1 THROUGH the love of God our Saviour,
All will be well;
Free and changeless is His favour,
All, all is well.
Precious is the blood that healed us,
Perfect is the grace that sealed us,
Strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,
All must be well.

2 Though we pass through tribulation,
All will be well.
Ours is such a full salvation,
All, all is well.
Happy still in God confiding;
Fruitful if in Christ abiding;
Steadfast through the Spirit's guiding:
All must be well.

3 We expect a bright tomorrow;
All will be well.
Faith can sing through days of sorrow,
All, all is well.
On our Father's love relying,
Jesus every need supplying;
Or in living or in dying;
All must be well.

It is of special note that this was the first recorded hymn that Mary (Bowley) Peters wrote after her husband of 4 years only went to be with the Lord. She was married at age 17 and was a widow at age 21. To my knowledge, she never remarried, nor did they have any children. Yet, only one whose confidence was in the Risen Christ could pen these words after losing her beloved husband ~ "... in days of sorrow, all must be well!"

Just an added note. I am finding that many of the hymn writers of the Little Flock hymnbook endured dire circumstances which gave rise to some of their hymns. Indeed, He alone that 'gives songs in the night' can also "give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness..." Isaiah 61:3.

According to biographical info found on this website Mary Bowley married Mr John Peters at age 39 and died at age 43. Mr Peters had been widowed six years before marrying Miss Bowley in 1852. He was about 22 years her senior.
Christopher Knapp appears to have been mistaken in the short note in his book.
