And Did The Holy And The Just

by Anne Steele (1716-1778)

Tune: Mapleton C.M.

1 AND did the Holy and the Just,
The Sovereign of the skies,
Stoop down to man's estate and dust
That guilty worms might rise?

2 Yes, the Redeemer left the throne,
The radiant throne on high ---
Surprising mercy, love unknown ---
To suffer, bleed, and die.

3 He took the guilty culprit's place
And suffered in his stead;
For man --- oh, miracle of grace ---
For man the Saviour bled.

4 Blest Lord, what heavenly wonders dwell
In Thine atoning blood!
By this are sinners saved from hell,
And rebels brought to God.

5 Jesus, my soul adoring bends
To love so full, so free;
Thy word declares that love extends
In saving power to me.

6 What glad returns can I impart,
For favour so divine?
Oh, take me, all, and fill my heart,
And make me wholly Thine.
