Mr. Darby was well & happy & expressed himself as being encouraged by the appearance of the Brethren gathered – no religious dilettantism about them, but downright honest desire to know God’s will & a readiness to do it. We went through Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, James, 1, 2, & 3rd epistles of John & found the effect of the teaching upon myself was to keep my conscience in the presence of God, & to train it there, rather to fill my head & imagination. The savor remains upon my spirit & I hope to treasure the truth I then received so that it may become a part of myself, & that I may walk without effort in the power of it, moving in the energy of the divine life which I possess in Christ, the risen man at God’s right hand. I took a few notes which help my memory, & we are now reading the same subjects together at Quebec. We broke bread together at the room at Guelph on the Sunday, & Mr. Darby spoke on John 13, & preached the same evening in the Town Hall to us and about 100 strangers on 2 Cor. 12.

A Church of England man from Toronto slept in the same room as me at A. Wells’, & expressed his glad surprise that he had found the presence of God consciously brought before his soul throughout this blessed meeting & that the Word of God had had extraordinary power upon his heart. I expected, he continued, something like a Methodist meeting – great shaking of hands outward
