He was born in Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland. His middle name Sandeman is interesting as it must be in honour of Robert Sandeman. There was a Sandemanian (or Glasite) church in Kirkby Lonsdale. Its return in the 1851 Religious Census was signed by John Allen, Elder, presumably the father of this John Allen, and who was no doubt a descendant (son?) of James Allen. The Sandemanian church in Kirkby Lonsdale, along with others in this area, were originally Inghamite but became Sandemanian under the influence of James Allen who became convinced of the rightness of the teaching of Sandeman and Glas. The story can be found in Alan P.F.Sell’s book ‘Church Planting’ about nonconformity in Westmorland where he notes that the Sandemanians had some similarities to Exclusive Brethren!
The 1911 Census records the family living at Marysville, Hoylake, on the Wirral, and living with them was an 18 year old grandson, also called John Sandeman Allen.

Another connection is that Robert Sandeman (1718-71), son-in-law of John Glas, wrote the hymn "See mercy, mercy from on high / Descend to rebels doomed to die". This hymn has featured in every edition of the Little Flock Hymn Book 'family' since 1838.
