Good Day

I have a small book written by R.A. Torrey, Vest Pocket Companion For Christian Workers. I'm trying to find out how old it is as there is no date in it. It was published by James Nesbit & Co. Ltd, address 22 Berners Street, London, w.1. Printed by Butler and Tanner Ltd, Frome and London R3724. Are you able to give me any information on this book please?

Thanks and Kind Regards

Hi Gill, it is hard to say for sure, but early editions of this book seem to be from 1895, and later printings, e.g.(http://library.nma.gov.au/libero/WebOpac.cls?VERSION=2&ACTION=DISPLAY&RSN=100060430&DATA=DNM&TOKEN=2VsvY7cSiP9990&Z=1) from1913, so it could be anywhere in this period really.

I have recently bought a old book from an antique store that I’m trying to get info on. The name of it is - SACRED STEPS FOR YOUTHFUL FEET. Says it was printed in
LONDON
JAMES NISBET AND CO. BERNERS STREET
MDCCCXLVIII

On next page it has;
T. C. JOHNS
WINE OFFICE COURT, FLEET STREET

On very front page it has some on name written in. I can’t make it out fully but it also has a date that was written on it. It looks like August 1866.

I guess I’m just trying to fine out if that date could be accurate and if the book could really be that old.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi Cheryl. Yes that date would sound about right. I don't know anything else about it but books from that period are not incommon.

Hi Cheryl,
Perhaps Nisbet's publishing date in Roman numerals is helpful? It gives 1848. Someone buying the book 18 years later seems reasonable.

John.

I am in the United States and in my mother's collection I found a book "The Story of Little Black Quasha" which appears to be similar to "The Story of Little Black Sambo". It was published in London by Nisbet & Co. LTD at 21 Berners St, W.1 Can you provide me any information as to date of publishing or possible value? The book is in very good condition and the cover is encased in a clear plastic like book cover, almost like a saran wrap but specifically made for the book. Thank you for any information you may provide me with.

Hi BC, it's hard to be specific about the date but likely around 1870 +-10 years. There are copies on AbeBooks you could use as a reference for value but realistically I doubt it is worth anything more than $10 really.

Beate

It seems that very few of the early "brethren's" books were published by Nisbet; a few writers like J.G. Deck and A. Pridham featured. Perhaps Nisbet would have had a wider, general Christian readership than the typical brethren publishers.

Hello, I have a book called The Spirit of Christ by Andrew Murray. I can’t find a publishing date but in the center of the title page it says “thirty-ninth thousand”. Does this mean it was published in 1939?

I think it just means at that point they had printed about 39 thousand of them.

I found a book today in an antique mall, it is " the Spirit of Christ" by Rev Andrew Murray. It has London, James Nisbet and Co, 21 Berners Street. Also says seventeenth Thousand. Any Idea when it might have been published? Thank you, God Bless. If you can give me an email address, I can send pictures of it, and a fee of the "New Books by Rev Andrew Murray on the back if it will help.

Rebecca, see entries above on this book, "The Spirit of Christ." There were, and probably still are a number of publishers that publish Andrew Murray's books. One is Whitaker House. This book, "The Spirit of Christ" is referred to in CI Scofield's book, "Right Dividing the Word of Truth" (on this website) first published in 1896.

Murray (1828-1917) dated the preface in "The Spirit of Christ" 1888, so it was freely in publication when Scofield referred to it. This might help to estimate when Nisbet first published it. Murray's book, "Humility" was also published by Nisbet, and is featured in the magazine "Footsteps of Truth" New Series, 13 (1895).

Perhaps others can help with a more exact date.

Just aquired a copy of Robinson Crusoe published by James Nesbit. Is there any way of finding out when it was published?
Sunday, Jan 22, 2023 : 04:40
Timothy Stunt said ...
If your copy of Robinson Crusoe mentions the 'Pocket series of English classics' (produced by the American publisher, Macmillan) it was probably published in the early years of the 20th century (c. 1907). For Robinson Crusoe's popularity with evangelical Protestants in the 1820s and 30s, see my 'From Awakening to Secession' [Edinburgh 2000] p. 98.
