Interesting reference on page 89 to his having been mayor in his town for two years. That seems atypical among the “brethren.” Are there other “brethren” who occupied similar positions?

Would be good to have more info about Mr. Petter.

Hi Rodger,

The Open brethren had completely different attitudes from the Exclusives to many of life's situations.

Petters had a significant presence in Yeovil

Percy (P.W.) Petter was Mayor of Yeovil in 1926-1927.

His wife Emily died in 1935, and he married Ruth Penson-Harris in 1946.

He was an active preacher and publisher.

Regards,

Could he be related to Edward Petter (1832-1910), known for “The Letters of Edward Petter” (www.edwardpetter.com) and featured here: https://www.brethrenarchive.org/site/forums/letters-of-edward-petter/? Edward Petter had two sons.

Many of the Open brethren, like Mr Petter here, moved away from the belief of those earlier brethren that the Body of Christ is on earth. He says: “That which the Lord described as ‘My Church’ and of which He is the Head, has never yet been seen by man; it exists in the heart of God.”

P.W. Petter was a grandson of Edward Petter's brother John. Kenneth Petter Frampton also related to both.

Whether it was right for Brethren to hold municipal office (eg. as a mayor) was an issue on which the earliest brethren at Plymouth were divided. In 1837 Benjamin Newton wrote to Dr Joseph Cookworthy, remonstrating with him over his 'political associations'. Cookworthy was the mayor of Plymouth from 1839 to 1841; see my Elusive Quest 37 n.28.
