  • J.N.D. isinherited by his father and inherited from an uncle

    Dear Brother,

It is said that John Nelson Darby was disinherited by his father and inherited from an uncle... Inheritances and successions necessarily leave notarial traces. Could you tell me if there are any official documents about these things? Thank you for your help.

    Thomas

  • Thomas, JND was the youngest of John Darby's eight children, so was way down the pecking order anyway.  He had inherited something from his uncle ten years before his father's death so that may have influenced his father's decision.  I think Max Weremchuk commented on this aspect in his biography of JND.

If you would like to give me your email address, I'll send you a copy of John Darby's will so you can see for yourself.

  • Thomas, John Darby DID NOT disinherit his son John Nelson Darby.

(See https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D281706 for John Darby's Will and https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D154762 for that of Sir Henry D'Esterre Darby.)

This rumour is dealt with in some detail in the upcoming Becoming J.N.D. published by SCS Press.
