Field & Work for Dec 1894 gives notice of a new regular feature for book reviews under the responsibility of J W Newton of Stowe, Vermont.
This is most probably the JWN from Help & Food (not to be confused with JWHN--J W H Nichols).

According to Alumni record of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut., 1931, J.W.N. is Jacob Warren Newton, born August 3, 1852 in Stowe, Vermont. Page 247–8 says: “Left college at the end of Freshman year. Engaged in farming in Stowe, Vt. 1873–77. Supplied a church in Chelsea, West Hill, Vt., 1877–79. Chaplain of the Hygienic Institute, Dansville, N. Y., 1879–80. Engaged in farming, 1880–98; in printing tracts and in home mission work, 1898–1904. Bookseller and stationer, 1904–30.”
According to ancestry.com J.W. Newton was married to Elizabeth Gordon Crawford (born 1853 in Scotland, died 1932 in Toccoa, Geogia), had six children and died on July 11, 1938 in Toccoa. In the 1910 cencus he is merchant by occupation resp. retail merchant in 1920 census, book trade.
